What is a natural or sustainable pool

En Ok Pool Reform inside of the Blog Pool maintenance we explain to you What is a Natural pool.

What is a Natural Pool

Ecological Pool

Ecological Pool

The ecological pool (natural or biopool) is a pool that can be of any size or shape, which contains natural water.

The pool water is purified through natural systems, that is, through aquatic plants; Therefore it replaces and does not use any chemical treatment.

Operation of natural pools

Natural pools, also called biopools or ecological pools, they use only plants to maintain the beach pool liner's natural relief. They do not use chemical purification systems.

On the other hand, they are very decorative pools because they resemble a natural pond and function as a complete ecosystem.

This system is almost always installed in the homes of people who love caring for the planet.

Owners of natural pools have a beautiful aquatic world to bathe in or simply to contemplate nature.

Likewise, its construction can have the use of just a pond, an ornamental area, a swimming pool or having all three together, a privilege at home or anywhere.

The beach pool liner achieves ideal water quality because its purification system is totally original.

On the other hand, its pool is built with the most diverse liner systems in a conventional pool.

But in reality, the most interesting thing about these pools is their designs to achieve water quality.

The ideal water in any pool has a transparency that allows you to see the bottom of its drain, a balanced pH and microbiologically it is zero harmful factors.

Like a pool like a beach free of bacteria and other harmful microorganisms.

Among other chemical and biological considerations that experts take into account in pool water purification systems, they manage to recreate an excellent place like an island.

In swimming pools to remove dirt from leaves and other elements.

Chlorine and other chemicals are commonly used to prevent the formation of biomass that feeds the proliferation of algae, moss and everything that darkens the water.

Up to this point there is no risk to health, but the quality of the water does decrease and shortly afterwards other organisms that are harmful begin to proliferate.

Especially bacteria that cause problems and diseases, especially when there is not enough sunlight and organic matter accumulates, which ends up generating a lack of oxygen and transparency in the water.

A biological filter ensures that at home you have a pool like a beach, since it does not use ammonia, it transforms it into nitrate by providing oxygen, the plants assimilate and absorb it to eliminate it naturally, preventing algae from forming in the pool.

Furthermore, the oxidation of ammonia produces beneficial bacteria in a porous material, managing to settle in different types of biological filters. Generally, a waterfall or air pumps provide the oxygen necessary for this type of ecosystem or beach-type pool.

In natural pools you have to take into account

  • Monitor the use of the pool, because filtration is natural.
  • The plants must be supervised and cared for (remove dead leaves...).
  • Greater presence of mosquitoes than pools treated with chlorine (can be avoided with frogs).
  • The space required is larger than that of a traditional pool (you will require a bathing area and a purifying area).
  • NOTE: : The purification area has to be approximately one third of the total surface of the pool.

Benefits of an ecological pool

  • Since it is a biological cycle (it renews itself).
  • There is almost no maintenance, it is only necessary to clean the bottom of the water approximately twice a year and no chemicals are required.
  • The water quality is optimal.
  • Thanks to the fact that there are no artificial products, promoting health (there will be no attacks on the skin, no irritations...) and also the environment.
  • You will save on water, there is no need to change it, so you will only restore the evaporated water.
  • The microclimate generated will provide a higher water temperature which will translate into being able to extend the bathing season.
  • Natural pools are aesthetically excellent in all environments.
  • Additionally, it allows the possibility of incorporating fish or aquatic animals that benefit from not having insects, larvae or mosquitoes. The space is converted into a place surrounded by nature, with the feeling of being on a lake.

Types of biological pools

In the case of natural biological pools, all these problems are eliminated by removing organic matter from the ecosystem with aquatic plants and biological filtering systems.

Biological filtering systems fulfill this function naturally and at a low cost, managing to create a pool that looks like a beach, with high water quality standards and without chemicals.

There are several types of natural biological pools:

Ecological pool without technology

The biological gravel filter of this type of natural pool has a vertical flow that is integrated into the swimming pool.

And the key is that it has aquatic plants that turn it into an area of water purification and regeneration, it circulates naturally by heating its surface.

It is an ecological filtering system with some limitations, especially the time you have to wait -.

Up to years to achieve a biological balance – which does not quite achieve optimal transparency, like swimming pools like artificial beaches.

It is a great solution for a beautiful natural pond in the garden and also an organic pool, as it has all the factors needed to enjoy the purity of the water to perfection.

Ecological pool with recirculation

It is a natural or ecological system without technology to which a pump is added that makes the water complete a recirculation cycle through its biological filter.

It is a process with which the sanitization of the natural pool is optimized and in some cases aerators are added to increase the capacity of the filter to circulate the water with greater precision and quality.

Ecological pool skimmer with filtration system

It is the sum of the two previous water purification systems in a natural sand pool.

But first of all, it increases the efficiency of the previous ones, since the elements that fall into the pool water such as leaves or insects are not removed.

But in this case these become part of the ecosystem and increase the natural filtration capacity.

With a skimmer and a filter, all the organic matter that falls into the pool water is removed through an automated process that manages to combine a more complete and faster way of disinfecting the water and achieves high levels of transparency, offering a great appearance to the pool.

Technological ecological pool

It is a sand pool where the times are shortened to have an ecosystem that works perfectly and prevents the proliferation of algae and bacteria that affect health.

This type of natural pool looks suitable and aesthetic in a short time because it manages to stabilize its biological balance, leaving it perfect to enjoy for longer and especially in times of greater heat.

It is a pool where there are adequate conditions since its technology is installed, which it ensures with a filter system.

Firstly, remove organic matter automatically from the pool.

The first algae scrubber filter encourages algae to grow and absorb nutrients and prevent the formation of other microorganisms.

The second ultraviolet filter eliminates the rest of the algae and achieves water transparency. Some omit this filter because it alters the normal formation of filamentous algae.

The third zeolite filter that eliminates ammonia and the reactor that eliminates phosphates.

It is important to highlight that the placement of all these filters is not required to modernize an ecological pool, since depending on its dimensions, the filters that are required in each case are calculated.

Specialists install what is required to keep the water crystal clear and as a spring-pool to enjoy at home.

Construction of natural pools step by step

In the ecological pool it will be essential to create two separate areas

On the one hand, a bathing area and on the other a purification area (filtration with gravel, sand or volcanic stones and adding different plants).

The water will be recirculated from one sector to the other through a pump.

In this way, the nutrients and microorganisms in the bathing area can be eliminated through the plants.

Absorbing nitrogen and phosphorus dissolved in water and maintaining its oxygenation.

To provide more oxygenation and cooperate with the disinfection of the water, it is advisable to install waterfalls or waterfalls.
